When I started watercolor painting well over a decade ago, I studied under a very talented watercolor artist in Charlotte, NC. She taught me the many processes of watercolor painting, and I really took to it! As the years have flown by, I have moved from plain watercolors completed on rough sketches, to a mixed-media type of presentation.
The following watercolor images traverse a wonderful journey from class projects to subject-specific watercolors. As you view my work, please note the use of line weight, bold colors, and especially the dark shadows that bring my watercolors to life.
Architectural & Unique Images
- My favorite type of watercolors are those of historic or aged architecture and unique old images. I find humor and interest in the years of decay, weathering, and band-aided facades that provide a multitude of interesting textures and shadows. The following images are among my favorite of the architectural elements that I have been blessed to paint. Each image is unique unto itself and shows the extensive detail that I include as part of my presentation.
Landscape Related Subjects
- As a Landscape Architect, the outdoors have always interested me due to the multiple colors, patterns, and textures that are present; along with the strong shadows that nature offers. From a rotting tree to a mountain stream to the butterfly on a flower, nature provides a spectacle of watercolor subjects for me to paint.
Interesting Characters
- The world offers a wonderful pallet of interesting characters! The following images show the fun that I have had while “people (or children) watching.” The following watercolors of young school children show the uniqueness of children off to school in cultures different from our own and the freedom of being young and energetic. From the Japanese children walking to school hand in hand to the Haitian children waiting patiently to enter school, these watercolors offer a different perspective of international education. The groupings of younger children always offers a unique and interesting pallet to paint for me, but don’t count out the adults. They always offer a different pallet of humor to paint. Please note that I always paint the images without faces. This has been a trade mark of mine ever since I started sketching as a landscape architect back in the 1970’s.
Church Related Subjects
- Church related subjects always provide a level of serene detail for me. The following church images are completely different from each other. They spotlight the landscape, the detail of the stained glass, or creative altar areas that are holiday specific.
Specialty Paintings
- The following specialty paintings are some of my favorite. They are colorful and have a good mixture human nature, historic fabric and a rich combination of perspective and shadows.
